Cobra 29 LX/EU Discontinued

In my opinion what a poor radio this was! Promised an awful lot but the delivery wasn’t the best implemented. Some key Cobra guys left and seems this made a difference in how things are. But Cobra now has opened a big office in Hong Kong responsible for sourcing new equipment, factories, designs etc. Will this year see a revolution in radios from them? Just Friday evening I received an email promising 6 New Radios in 2018 But not market specific. So as Markus Neuner always tells me “We must wait and see 😀” Just needed a few of the rough edges smoothed out. Like many radios recently and history. Always could have been a little better.

  1. I have the American version of the 25LX, which is like the 29LX, just less bells and whistles. It’s OK, I suppose, and a fine backup unit, but it’s not my favorite. It’s a little too modern, and lacks SSB.

    I hope that rumor about Cobra removing themselves from the American CB market is false; they are a fairly big name, over here, and I fear that if they pull out, others (Midland, Uniden, etc.) would feel prompted to do the same.

    • I see that Midland have a couple of new things in USA and Uniden they are still promoting new radios. Cobra, as I know they opened a new “sourcing facility” in Hong Kong to find factories to make stuff. Will they be sold? Just stop making radios? I don’t know but if you’ve more details let us all know

    • I personally have no details. In regard to Cobra, I was commenting on a previous comment. I do hope, however, that their latest contribution to the US market (which would be my market) is a sign that they intend to continue developing and marketing new CB products for us. If they saw fit to offer us a model or two with SSB, I’d likely be inclined to give it a try.

      Sadly, though, CB’s tend to be going out of style, here in the States, even amongst the truck drivers. Much of that, I think, has to do with a virtually non-existent marketing strategy, on the part of manufacturers, distributers, and retailers. They direct marketing, online, to those of us who express an interest, and truck stops place sales flyers that feature a radio, or two, in the bathrooms. But there is zero effort to attract to people to the product. It’s a shame, really.

      That’s why I was concerned, when I read the comment that stated that Cobra may see fit to stop producing radios for the US; a name that big in the hobby… if they give up, it’s not hard to see others give up, too.

    • That’s indeed a shame really. It will be nice if they continue to be on the scene and would be a great loss to the CB world. Let’s hope that there will be a positive outcome.

  2. Simon, found the 29 LX to be quite “robotic” on audio too.
    Had a whisper from a reliable contact in the US that Cobra are pulling out of CB in the US and concentrating their development on “dash cams”. Not sure of the stability of the claims but hey …
    How we loved the older days!
