Guglielmo Marconi, the son of an Italian merchant from Lombardy, began his experiments with the transmission and reception of radio waves in 1894. Working in amateur conditions – and partly secretly from his father – in September 1895 he obtained radio communication over a distance of 1 kilometer. Not seeing any interest in his invention in Italy, he left in February 1896 for England.
