Throwback Thursday Maycom EM-27 & Others

This time we will feature a radio that was seen in so many guises and like many was loved or hated in equal amounts. Some had a leaky battery until that was cured, some suffered bad audio, some worked ultra well and indeed some were hard to find for sale, and indeed are still the same. Yes it is the Maycom EM-27

In some ways it was ahead of its time in design, looked sleek and modern and fit for any shack or car. On the inside was an export radio like no other. 24mhz and upwards, working well from around 25.105 FM and I remember “back in the day” speaking to Mr Ray down on around 25.555 FM with the standard power and it made magic across the miles, and even that low we had break breakers from Sweden and Norway I recall so that was “another throwback time”

Play around a little and add an ASC and it became the mythical President Harrison. Hard to find these days for sale and indeed I bought a boxed one from France around 6 years ago and was into the hundreds of euros back then.

Then why not add a DTMF and call it the Stabo XM7082 but under the hood was still a Korean produced heart of a Maycom. And of course there was the Realistic TRC-1080 and others from the same parents, all Maycom.

I remember the “fun” mod where the word fun flashed and the radio would show 23.815 and ended out at 30.555mhz but mine starts to transmit around mid 25mhz which when this was released is pretty good going.

So that’s some of the reasons this week the “Throwback Thursday” is the Maycom EM-27

If was released again would it sell? Update it a little and put right some of the issues and I think YES it could
