Kenwood Pro Talk 23 (PKT-23)

Avera in the Netherlands has showcased the new Kenwood UHF Radio called the Pro Talk 23. IP54 dust and water resistance with 500mw of power on the 446mhz band. PC Software is also available for this model.

As the radio can take PC Programming it makes you wonder if there is more power or indeed more than the 8 channels available under the hood of this one. So far online I have found it for $148 plus shipping and 1.5w power with quoted frequency range of 440-470MHz so maybe there is a hint there..

  1. Yeah, I got caught by this sort of thing, about 15 years ago, when I first tried 446. I bought an Alinco DJ-446, which I soon found out was just a DJ-596 UHF set, neutered down to 0.5w from 5w and the band shortened for 446 and an aerial which was built in rather than BNC/SMA. Luckily it was just a snip to get back the 5w.

I must say if I wanted a small radio, I’d go for a UV-3R for about £20 delivered. Dual band, 2w and it does the 446 steps as well. Plus an FM radio.
