Longer and warmer days ahead and the PMR operators will be heading to the mountains for some DX action. Same as parents buying radios for the holidays so the kids can have some fun and be spied on at the same time.
Rugged
The Dynascan Rugged from Pihernz which can be acquired from Electronico Barcello is just like it says on the box “Rugged” Heavy built and strong received audio and super transmit capabilities. Of course it comes with 16 channels, 500mw power, fixed antenna and the options in the menu for CTCSS and DCS installation. What’s nice is how the radio feels in the hands, it’s got a feeling best described as sturdy. In a way sort of built for life’s bumps and bangs so to speak. And also remember this radio has IP67 also so for again builders, PMR men and ladies out on the hills and for other career users the radio is built tough ready for you. Add to this anti-shock and drop resistant. It reminds me of the Motorolas in the early 2000s that were bomb proof use. This falls absolutely into the same category.

Dual PTT
Underneath the decently sized display is a PTT and on the left hand side is another PTT. It’s going to sound odd but you don’t know you need it until you make a call and then its reason is quite obviously a good idea.

Charging
The box includes a drop in desk charger and actually it charges really quite quickly. I found it around 90-120 minutes and was ready for action.
Usage
When I went to the city on a walk about I could hear hotel concierges calling taxis on channel 8, builders and all those who didn’t change the channel using channel 1 and shoe shops, cafes and all sorts of chats on the 1-8 whilst most of the time here in Budapest channels 9-16 remained silent. Either sign of the times or indeed people using 8 channel and not invested in newer 16 channel radios. It was buzzing across the usual 8 and went quieter as you moved further away from the centre of town towards the home location. It’s one of my favourites at the moment. It’s got that something whatever it is. Heavy in the hand, can be used long time and it would appear to be PC programmable according to the internet. IF they made one of these with 400-470Mhz it would be awesome to sling in the pocket for repeaters and odds and ends while out and about and without the need to carry heavier and more expensive equipment.

More to follow when we make some contacts from the hills soon….
