A small snippet from today’s radio activity. Radio in action was Lincoln II v3 with AT6666 mike with changed electret and antenna was a Sigma Eurocomm 9ft 2 piece steel whip.

Contacts and conditions were ok, bit hit and miss but fine. No linear amplifier as plays with cars on board stuff. So here goes.

Ottawa Canada, Brazil, Nova Scotia, Virginia and Ohio in USA and a nice 5/5 report from Barbuda Island (120LR0)
And no issues audio, noises, coughs and splutters. V3 blew away Grant II which also was with me.

But another contact of the day was Spain on 27:335 USB on the Virginia antenna. You see it behind the steel whip and that’s incredibly small. Obviously not designed for DX and this one came from Markus @neuner_de on Twitter.
Report on Virginia, bandwidth etc will be in you tube when back home. Now, just iPhone 6plus access to post things.
I know people hate the V3 and some with amazing passion. Mine works better AM/SSB than my George but FM original Lincoln is better. Receive better on SSB than George and original Lincoln.
Wouldn’t swap or eBay mine as works to well
The difference is, the DR135 is half the price (in the UK), for what is a pretty comparable rig to the Lincoln II. That’s like saying my £40K BMW is just as good as your £20K Mondeo. Well, it may be, but then I have £20K sitting in my pocket that you don’t.
President Jacksons selling, are just indicative of the tat that manufacturers (like President) are having produced in Chinese factories at Japanese/Western factory prices. They are trading on their name, and it is fast going down the pan. I doubt that they will ever get it back. BTW, you can still get Jackos in good nick (unmolested) for about £70 plus delivery, just not from ebay UK.
RoHS is not a problem, it is an excuses for manufacturers laziness. I have HF rigs and sideband tunes in effortlessly, if it needed tuning at all. Usually I just put it on the frequency and the station is there, the RIT/Clarifier is almost redundant.
Take a Lincoln II, at £250 (that’s what we pay in the UK) add just over £200 and have a Yaesu FT-450d (£485 with cashback).

Still made in Japan, that one I believe. It’s not about hating the Lincoln II, it’s about disliking for being ripped over for an over priced radio, made in China and then inflating the price because of the name.
I worked for Honda (UK) for 20 years. 10 years in product planning/business marketing (factory ordering/pricing/buying/selling retail) and 10 years as an area manager. I know all about manufacturing, importing, pricing and the market. The Lincoln II is name trading on what is for me, a sub standard product.
Catch me 11 years ago with my new (last of) Lincoln I, and I would have had very different things to say about it. It cost me £200 new from Truck-King. But it was well made and I could see what I was getting for the money. It didn’t need to go back to the factory to be modded, to get it to work, QC and homologation did their job.
What can I add? I think your right in many many ways! For me I think £159-£189 is price Lincoln II to be fair against its competition. But line costs and tooling can be high (we don’t know) Alinco didn’t work for me in the car, nor did CRE8900. Grant II gets noise too. Lincoln II in my car works that’s why I say that I say.
Lincoln hater here. Saying that it was better than your George isn’t really saying much though, is it. Neither set is brilliant and you won’t get change out of £200 for either.
£250 for a Lincoln, £200 for a George and £126 for a DR135UK. Now me have some time to think about this one…
Yep agree. Have you seen two days ago in Germany €337 euro for a boxed Jackson1. I can say that I’ve used 6900n in car and Lincoln II and for me Lincoln works better. George & Lincoln 1 at home better than Lincoln II based on noise. DR135UK ain’t nothing to sing about either. Day of 100% SSB radio probably gone since ROHS reared its head?
Hi Simon, nice to hear you have such great qso’s. I am also running a Virginia on my car, wich gives me pefect results on local rx/tx. Have not tried to dx with it yet.
Hi Bert. Honestly was shocked. Called ola ola and he replied and was near Malaga. For me just 40 channel bandwidth so couldn’t use it 555 or similar but 40 channels mid was great. Stunned how it works as so small an antenna?
good antenna but I will stick with sirio 5000 3/8 great swr not cut anything off and very happy with the crt mike had some great contacts over the week end all say very good loud audio I like it allot smaller better its the way for the mod cars
CRT is indeed a worker! Couldn’t carry my 3/8 this time as short time away and space etc. for €99 the audio from the Mike is really first class €200 nice and strong indeed
thank you Simon we are all well. good one a great height but it works thanks for the extra pictures and I have sent away for comp and I pick c a good little radio ps what was the swr on that steel whip
SWR on steel whip was 1:9 down on 26mhz and 27:200-27:700 didn’t move. Was working super well. UK/CEPT doesn’t need anything tuned at all. But 26965-26500 you need adjust a bit
well done Simon great contacts on the steel whip and great contact on the Virginia antenna looks like you had a great time does not look very high what height were you Simon all the very best 73s
Hi Stephen. Just added two photos. Guess between 300-400m and not more and could have been less. Hope your well and greetings Simon 73s
