Czech PMR 446 DX’ing

Those who have known me long time know my desire for the magic band of 446MHz. The Czech Republic has a superb array of mountains around the country so it lends itself well to the men and ladies who take to the men with these small 500mw radios with integrated antennas and try make some contacts.

In my history there are videos of making 100km on 400mw PMR Watch, we have tried beams, dipoles and of course mostly normal radios with no modifications but with good audio and receive which you need when out and about on the hills.

Investment is small and the outcome is maximum. I myself since I guess 2002/3 have been on mountains around the Czech Rep and Poland for these events. There was a time we could make 100, 150, 200, 250km from a hill to hill. I myself with a Stabo PMR have made a QSO from the border of Germany on the Czech side to a hill on the Czech side that borders Poland so well in excess of 200km. Just on rechargeable battery power.

If you have a hill you have no excuse just go out and have a go. You will actually find it quite amazing how well you will do. I am waiting now for the season of the PoMeRanc men (Pomeranc means Orange in Czech Language) to begin with the dx’ing events. Sadly now with 1000+ km round trips I tend to pick the events I go to, but sure you will catch me on the air.
